From Open Spaces to Policy Making: Strengthening Youth Work in Lithuania
In April 2026, a strategic Study Visit brought together educators and NGO leaders from across Europe
to explore the Lithuanian youth work ecosystem. The program, “From Open Spaces to Policy
Making,” focused on the powerful connection between municipal strategy and local implementation.
The journey began with a significant milestone: the official inauguration of the Trakai Youth Centre.
Participants joined local authorities at the Trakai Municipality to discuss policy frameworks that
support such vital spaces. The visit continued with an exploration of diverse educational models,
including the nature-based Waldorf school “Patirčių slėnis” and modern youth hubs in Lentvaris
and Elektrėnai, showcasing how different environments can cater to the diverse needs of young
people.
A defining highlight of the visit was the immersive experience at the M. Šimelionis Gymnasium in
Lentvaris. In a powerful display of youth agency, the Student Council organized the entire visit
themselves. The students took full responsibility for the day, leading the international delegation on a
guided excursion of the school and facilitating deep-dive discussions on student involvement.
Participants then joined students directly in their classrooms—from chemistry labs to cooking and
sports—experiencing first-hand the result of a school culture that truly empowers its pupils.
The visit concluded with a dedicated session for partnership building and future cooperation.
Participants gathered to reflect on the good practices observed and to transform these insights
into concrete project ideas. By bridging the gap between different European organizations, the
closing of the event served as a starting point for new strategic alliances. This final phase
ensured that the connections made in Lithuania would evolve into long-term international
projects, continuing to strengthen the quality of youth work and formal education across the
continent.
